ஒவ்வாமை
Allergy Definition:

உடம்பிற்கு ஒத்துக் கொள்ளாத எதுவாக இருப்பினும் ஒவ்வாமை எனப்படும். ஒவ்வாமை என்பது மனித உடலின் நோய் தடுப்பாற்றல் அமைப்பில் உண்டாகும் கோளாறினால் ஏற்படும் ஒரு நிலையாகும். சூழலில் இருக்கின்ற சில ஒவ்வாப்பொருட்களால் (allergens) ஒவ்வாமை விளைவுகள் ஏற்பட வாய்ப்புண்டு. பூச்சிக்கடி போன்றவற்றாலும் உடலில் ஒவ்வாமை விளைவுகள் ஏற்படும்.

ஒவ்வாமையால் அரிப்பு, தடிப்பு, மூக்கொழுகல், தும்மல், கண்களில் நீர்வழிதல் போன்ற விளைவுகள் சாதாரணமாக ஏற்படும். ஆஸ்துமா போன்ற உடல்நலக் கேட்டு நிலைகளுக்கு ஒவ்வாமையும் ஒரு பெருங்காரணமாக அமையும்

ஒவ்வாமை என்னும் நிலையை 1906ல் வியன்னாவைச் சேர்ந்த கிளெமென்சு வான் பிர்குவே (பிர்குவெட்?) என்னும் குழந்தைகள் நல மருத்துவர் கண்டுபிடித்தார்.

அவரிடம் மருத்துவம் பெற்றுக் கொண்ட சிலர் தூசு, மகரந்தம், சில வகை உணவு வகைகள், இவற்றிற்கு அதீத எதிர்விளைவுகள் கொண்டவர்களாய் இருப்பதைக் கண்டபோது, பிர்குவே இந்நிலைக்கு ஒவ்வாமை (allergy) என்று பெயரிட்டார். இச்சொல் கிரேக்க மூலம் கொண்டது. allos + ergon என்னும் வேர்ச்சொற்களில் இருந்து allergy என்று பெயர் வந்தது.^[1]
